10 Balloon Decorating Ideas without Helium

No helium? No problem! There are plenty of great balloon decorating ideas that don’t require helium, and can look just as stunning.

Unlike helium, air-filled balloons can be inflated ahead of time which is great when you’ve got lots to do on the day. Just keep in mind that balloons will deflate slightly overnight.

Lots of balloons always look more effective than just a few, so we recommend using a balloon pump to make the job faster (and save you passing out!)

Here are our top 10 ideas:

1. Fill The Floor

One of the easiest options by far is to simply fill balloons and let them float around the floor. Kids will have a blast just running through the balloons and trying to catch them. Be prepared for some to pop, so not recommended for younger children who may place burst balloons in their mouths.

2. Hang Balloons from the Ceiling

Hanging balloons from the ceiling can look just as effective as those filled with helium. Attach curling ribbon, then stick the top of the balloon to the ceiling to look like it is floating. Use doubled up masking tape, removable 3M pads or Blu-Tak. Take care removing balloons to avoid damaging ceiling.

Alternatively hang balloons from the ceiling upside down. A large cluster of balloons will look great placed over your party table.

3. Big Top

Create a big top look by hanging a cluster of balloons in the centre of the ceiling, then draping plastic tablecloths or streamers out to the sides of the room.

4. Balloon Bunches

Using curling ribbon, tie bunches of balloons together and hang on the corners of door and window frames, mantlepiece, stairs and more.

5. Balloon Backdrop

Create a fun balloon backdrop for your party table or photo booth. Simply fix balloons to your wall using Blu-Tak, Balloon Stickups or removable 3M pads. Get creative with colours to match your theme. Take care removing balloons to avoid damaging wall.

Use latex balloons or plain foil balloon shapes for a stunning backdrop.

6. Balloon Garland

Balloon garlands are probably the most popular decorating trend right now and are so easy to create. Simply inflate different coloured balloons to a range of different sizes and tie onto nylon or string for a stunning balloon decoration. Reusable balloon garland strips make creating garlands super easy, or our Balloon Garland Kits have everything you need to create your own garland, and come in a range of colour options.

7. Balloon Sticks

Balloon sticks are a quick and easy way to make balloons look like they’re “floating” without helium. Place sticks in a tall vase for a colourful table centrepiece, then hand them out to guests when the party ends.

8. Use a Net

Filling a fishing net will balloons is the perfect option for a Mermaid, luau or beach themed party. The net can be attached to a ceiling, or vertically on a wall behind a party table. The net can also be easily embellished with other decorations and props to add to your theme.

9. Balloon Drop

Cut a large piece of tulle or a plastic tablecloth in half. Place each half side by side and join together with a length of crepe paper streamer using pieces of masking tape spaced along the join. Use enough pieces of tape so that the sides stay together, but not so much that they will not separate when the streamer is pulled. Don’t forget to leave extra length of streamer to pull.

Attach all four corners to the ceiling with masking tape, then fill with balloons, and confetti (if you don’t mind the extra mess).

Get everyone to do a count down before the birthday girl/boy pulls the streamer, releasing the balloons inside.
