Looking for a sweet (and seriously cute) treat for Valentine’s Day? These Sweet Heart Cookies are made using classic sugar cookies topped with edible conversation heart images—just like the iconic candies we all know and love.
Whether your cookies say “Kiss Me”, “True Love” or “XOXO”, they’re a heartfelt way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a homemade touch.
Here is how to recreate this sweet gift at home:
What we used:
- Sugar Cookie Dough: Our favourite recipe
- Food Colouring (Optional): to make red sugar cookies we used Chefmaster Super Red
- Coo Kie Mini Heart Cookie Cutter (matches the edible image perfectly)
- Colour Mill Decorators Dough Fondant
- Edible Icing Image - Pre-cut Valentine’s Sweet Hearts
- Rolling Pin
- Small Brush and Water: your "glue"
- Cute packaging we used Loyal Cookie Boxes and shredded tissue
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep and Cut Your Dough
Divide your sugar cookie dough into sections. We used 1/2 of the cookie dough recipe to make white and half for the ‘red velvet’ look cookies. This will make approximately 20-25 mini heart cookies.

Roll out your dough and cut hearts using the mini heart cookie cutter.
For the Red cookies, add food colouring to your dough and thoroughly knead through before cutting.

2. Bake to Perfection
Place your hearts on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake at 175 degrees C for 6-8 minutes, until the edges are just set but not browned.
Let them cool completely—fondant will melt on a warm cookie!
3. Prepare the Fondant Toppers
While the cookies cool, roll out your white or pastel fondant. Use the same heart cutter you used for the cookies to ensure a perfect fit.

4. Add the "Conversation"
Brush a thin layer of water (alternatively use a thin layer of sugar syrup or edible glue) onto the front of the fondant heart. With dry hands, set your pre-cut Sweet Hearts edible image gently onto the corresponding cookie.
The water acts as a glue to keep the topper in place, but be careful not to get the printed side of the edible image wet, as the ink will run!

5. Assemble the Hearts
Using the same ‘glue’ brush a tiny amount of your water mixture onto the back of the fondant heart. Gently press it onto the corresponding cookie.
6. Package with Love
Line a gift box with shredded paper or tissue. Arrange your hearts in rows to show off the different messages. Close the lid, add a ribbon, and you've got a professional-looking gift!
